When people think about pregnancy care, they usually imagine routine doctor visits, ultrasounds, and prenatal vitamins.
What many families do not realize is that there are entire areas of care that are rarely discussed during those appointments.
Pelvic floor therapy is one of the least discussed topics.
During my last two pregnancies and postpartum periods, I experienced severe hip pain. It was the kind of pain that made simple daily movements feel difficult. Walking, standing, even turning over in bed could feel uncomfortable.
I mentioned it during appointments, hoping someone might have an explanation.
No one did.
Across twelve different providers within the same organization, not a single person mentioned pelvic floor therapy as a possible source of support.
It was not until years later, while networking for my doula business, that I met a pelvic floor physical therapist. During our conversation she began describing the work she did with pregnant and postpartum clients.
For the first time, something clicked.
Pelvic floor physical therapists specialize in the muscles that support the bladder, uterus, and bowel. These muscles play an enormous role during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery.
Taking care of your pelvic floor
When these muscles are under strain or not functioning properly, people can experience symptoms like pelvic pain, hip pain, back pain, leaking urine, or discomfort during movement.
Many people assume these symptoms are simply part of pregnancy or better yet Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction.
In reality, many of them can be treated or improved with the right care.
Pelvic floor therapists work with clients to strengthen, relax, and retrain these muscles. They may guide exercises, body mechanics, breathing techniques, and movement strategies that support the body during pregnancy and help recovery after birth.
For some parents, this care can significantly reduce pain and improve mobility.
Pelvic floor therapy can also be helpful after birth. Recovery from pregnancy and labor involves healing muscles that have carried a tremendous load for many months. Therapy can help address issues like pelvic weakness, abdominal separation, or lingering discomfort.
Despite how valuable this care can be, many families still never hear about it during routine prenatal visits.
This is one of the reasons I became so passionate about helping families learn what support is truly available to them.
Pregnancy care does not have to stop at routine appointments. There are professionals whose entire focus is helping parents feel stronger, more comfortable, and better supported during this journey.
